Mike's Concerts for the 2007-8 Season

All concerts except the Conservatory Chorus (see below) take place at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, 50 Oak St. All concerts are free of charge.

Voice/Guitar Project

Wednesday, November 28, 8pm
Recital Hall

A collaboration between the voice and guitar departments at the Conservatory, this concert will include the voice/guitar version of my song "The Mad Farmer Revolution," which took first prize earlier this year at the Conservatory Art Song Competition. Most unusually, I will be playing the guitar part myself--upon my trusty Telecaster, Thumper.

The Viola Project

Friday, November 30, 8pm
Recital Hall

This will be my second Viola Project, an annual performance of brand new pieces for viola by Conservatory composers. Last year I wrote for solo viola; this year I'm pairing up the viola with an oud--a fretless Middle Eastern lute, which I shall attempt to perform myself. It'll be like a high-wire act--come watch!

Conservatory Chorus: Holiday Concert

Friday, December 14, 8pm
***St. Marks' Lutheran Church, 1111 O'Farrell St.*** (note the alternative location)

Some great, unconventional holiday music including Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols,' something by Ralph Vaughn Williams, and Tomas de Victoria's 'O Magnum Mysterium.'

The Michael T Guitar Concert

featuring the premiere of the complete Cervantes Suite, "I Will Sing of Your Love" for guitar ensemble, and Cuentos de Eva Luna
Friday, January 25, 2008, 8pm
Concert Hall

An entire evening of Michael T original works for the classical guitar.

The keystone of the program will be the very first complete performance of the Cervantes Suite--seven movements for solo guitar that have taken me almost four years to complete. The best part is that each movement will be performed by a different guitarist, and I've managed to recruit some of the best at the school. I'll be among the ranks, and believe me, I'm at the back of the line. These dudes can shred.

Following the Suite, all seven of us will join forces to premiere "I Will Sing of Your Love/When Will You Come To Me?" for guitar ensemble. Some of you were on hand to witness the debut of this piece last fall, in its original arrangement for soprano, woodwind quintet, bass, and percussion. It should be pretty rad on guitars.

The evening will conclude with Cuentos de Eva Luna, songs set to prose by Isabel Allende, and featuring the voice of Andrea Alfaro, the cello of Charly Akert, the guitar of Zac Selissen, and the charango of yours truly.

You can hear all of these pieces (with selected movements of the Cervantes Suite) on the Jukebox.

Michael T's Big Final Concert

Hear Two Years of Graduate School in Only One Hour!!!
Saturday, May 17, 2008, 8pm
Osher Salon

All the best work of my two years at the Conservatory will be performed for your enjoyment (and my successful graduation). Like the Guitar Concert, this will be a chance to hear an entire program of my music, with me performing in several works (and truly excellent musicians performing the rest). The program has yet to be finalized, but will likely include the following pieces (some rearranged from their original versions):

"I Will Sing of Your Love/When Will You Come to Me?" for soprano, woodwind quintet, bass, and percussion
"The Mad Farmer Revolution" for soprano and jazz quartet
"I Am Because We Are" for solo guitar
"Cervantes da la espada a los cueros de vino" for solo guitar
"I Will Go to Sow the Seed" for gospel band and viola

And other works currently under construction:
A work for a cappella chorus
"The First Dance," a tiny opera in 10 minutes or so, with story and lyrics by Mike too

It's looking like the evening will be shared by my composition colleague Liam Staskawicz, so more bang for your free admission.

More details to come. Hope you can make it!
